If you're going to visit Annie's, stretchy clothes are required. "We are not about fast food, we are for the experience." - Annie's Burger Shack. That is certainly true, if the experience involves expanding waist lines and waddling home drunk on burgers. I am a self confessed 'foodie' and definitely not someone who shies away from over-ordering. Although, I have to admit the portion size at Annie's defeated me. Oh the shame. But, who's complaining? Trust me, you won't be feeling hungry for a while after Annie's. Annie's is open 12-5pm everyday for lunch and 5-late Monday to Sunday for dinner. They have 30 crazy burgers on offer, 5 types of fries, more sides, 6 types of cheese, top-ups, 11 extra sauces, 3 dogs and nachos. Not to mention all the ales, slushies and milkshakes. Apparently everything can be made to be vegetarian or vegan friendly, which is great, however I'm not sure how the vegan friendly would work? You'll need a good 20 minutes minimum to choose from all the burgers on offer. Seriously. I was torn between The Elvis (burger smothered with peanut butter and jam), The Kogumaza (burger smothered in satay sauce, crunchy onions, coconut and coriander) and The North Carolina. In the end, after a game of eeny meeny miney mo we opted for The North Carolina (burger topped with 8 hour slow cooked BBQ'd pulled pork, Red Leicester and crispy fried onions) and The Gringo (burger topped with a tortilla basket, chilli garlic sauce, Mexican spiced rice, refried beans, salsa and sour cream) Like I said, they're not stingy on the portion control. The buns are quite bog standard, and I would have liked more cheese on my curly fries. However, the burger itself was sublime. Tasted freshly homemade, with no holding back on the toppings. They don't ask you how you want the patty cooked, like P&B and Byron do, but it was juicy and tender nonetheless. VERDICT:
Queue: I visited on a Tuesday night around 7:30pm, and had to wait no more than 10 minutes at the bar. I've heard the queues can be epic so perhaps Fridays and Saturdays it's best to book (if you can!) Price: The burgers range from £9-12, the most expensive being £12.90, so you're looking at about £15 for the food if you want extras. The drinks are also more than reasonable. Ambience: Inside is pretty chilled out, nothing too wacky or fancy. We saw a real mix of people, even a couple people in tuxedos so anyone is welcome. I think London has a reputation for having the best burgers around, but there's serious competition up here in the Midlands from Annie's. A huge step above Meet Burger in my opinion, so if you can, hop over to Nottingham. Definitely returning to try the other 28 burgers when this food baby subsides...
