A sneaky hidden gem, celebrating/commiserating the end of University life. Dissertation is done, exams are over so now it's time to feast. Hidden away down by the river trent in Gunthorpe, Tom Brown's Brasserie is offering up a relatively inexpensive dining experience. The converted Victorian schoolhouse has a chic and stylish metallic interior. They have a chandelier made out of spatulas, spoons and ladles, which I love. The inside is very tasteful and so is the menu. We chose the Early Bird menu, although Tom Brown's also has an A La Carte and Sunday lunch menu. The Early Bird menu has a choice of 4 different starters, 5 main courses and 4 desserts. You can either have 2 courses for £16.95 or 3 for £19.95. Naturally, we course 3 courses and for just under £20 a head it's a bargain not to be missed. Diving into their fabulous cocktail menu, I chose a refreshing jam based cocktail. I can't quite remember the name of it (Pot of Jam, Jam Jar?) but it was slightly sharp and perfect for a hot evening. For starters we chose the Ham Hock terrine and Asparagus. I'm not always a huge fan of black plates, but the presentation was spot on. Simple and charming. My egg was perfectly runny and the truffled hollandaise was a foolproof match. I might try and make my own hollandaise at some point. There was a £2.00 supplement with my asparagus dish, which I thought was a little cheeky but I'd definitely order this dish again. For the mains, we chose the fish and chips and Hake. Homemade fish and chips are always a winner in my books, especially with a side of beef dripping chips and tartar sauce. My hake was perhaps my favourite dish of the evening. The Indian accompaniments worked so well together with the hake, and the carrot and cumin puree was the perfect addition to the dish. VERDICT: Queue: We visited on a Sunday and had booked a table. The restaurant was relatively full, so I'd advise booking just in case. Price: The Early Bird menu is 2 courses for £16.95 or 3 for £19.95, although watch out for a few extra supplements here and there. The A La Carte menu is naturally slightly pricier. A celebration or special occasion would be perfect for an evening or lunch at Tom Brown's. Ambience: Chic and characterful, friendly staff, great standard of food, perhaps ideal for a Father's Day trip? Although we were marvellously stuffed, we couldn't resist dessert after spying a few of these glorious dishes walking past. After careful deliberation, we chose the white chocolate cheesecake and chocolate tart. Both desserts were 'deconstructed', which seems to be the popular thing nowadays. Aside from the wonderful presentation, the desserts are a must have (might just be my sweet-tooth talking?). I loved the peanut brittle and salted caramel. A triumphant finale to a fab evening.
